Cloud Security Basics: What Small Businesses Need to Get Right

Cloud services still need careful access, configuration and recovery decisions.
Cloud platforms make it easier to work from anywhere, but convenience does not remove the need for security. Your files, email, business applications and customer information still depend on a few important decisions being made correctly.
Start with access
Use unique accounts for every person. Turn on multi-factor authentication wherever it is available, especially for email, administrator accounts and financial systems. Review user access when someone changes roles or leaves the business, and remove old accounts instead of leaving them dormant.
Keep configuration intentional
Default settings are not always the right settings for your business. Review external sharing, administrator privileges, connected applications and sign-in alerts. Limit access to the information each person actually needs.
Protect recovery, not just availability
A cloud service is not automatically a backup. Confirm what is backed up, how long it is retained, and how quickly your business could restore critical data after accidental deletion, ransomware or account compromise. Test recovery before an emergency.
Monitor the signals
Unexpected sign-ins, new forwarding rules, unfamiliar applications and unusual downloads can be early warnings. Make sure someone is responsible for reviewing alerts and acting on them.
